We are a small, Canterbury-based, local business. We believe in tailor-made, private tuition - the type which doesn't see children sit in a class, with one tutor and six students - all studying different topics at different levels. We pride ourselves in our attention to detail, support and guidance - as well as our weekly feedback.
Dr Joanna Thornton-Smith PhD, MA, BA (Hons)
Proprietor CTC and Tutor
Hello! I'm Joanna. I love being able to help students make the most of their abilities. It's so rewarding to see our students do well in their exams. I specialise in 11 Plus tuition. I also teach English and History up to A Level and History to undergraduate level.
I grew up in Kent. I started having extra tuition just ahead of my 11+ exam. I went to Highworth Grammar School for Girls in Ashford, Kent. I took GCSEs and A Levels there. I had extra tuition for my Maths GCSE (I got an A). I studied History, English and Politics and left school with As.
I attended the University of Liverpool for my undergraduate degree and my Master's degree - in History and Twentieth Century History respectively. I was awarded a scholarship at the University of Kent, where I completed a PhD.
I have been an Assistant and Associate Lecturer at the University of Kent. I also have a lot of experience working in schools, lecturing and running workshops. My very first job was for a tutoring company in Ashford, Kent. I carried on tutoring children and students throughout all three of my degrees.
I run CTC. I'm in charge of all the lesson plans and work schemes. I'm happy and friendly and I love to be around people who want to learn. Do get in touch if you have any questions for me.
